Despite the pressure of inflation in Bangladesh, the number of accounts in banks is increasing day by day. According to the latest information, the number of accounts of individuals and organizations with more than crore rupees in the bank has exceeded 1 lakh 18 thousand. This information has emerged in the updated report of Bangladesh Bank for June 2024.

According to the data of the Central Bank, the total number of depositors in the bank sector at the end of June 2024 stood at 15 crore 84 lakh 77 thousand 523. 18 lakh 38 thousand 83 crores are deposited in these accounts. Among them, there are 1 lakh 18 thousand 784 bank accounts with deposits of more than 1 crore rupees. 7 lakh 73 thousand 59 crores are deposited in these accounts. That is, 42.05 percent of the total deposits in the country’s banking sector account holders.

As of March this year, there were 1 lakh 15 thousand 890 bank accounts with deposits of more than 1 crore rupees. Total deposits in these bank accounts were Tk 740 thousand 150 crores. In other words, millionaire accounts have increased by 2 thousand 894 in the span of three months. Before that, the number of such bank accounts was 1 lakh 16 thousand 908 till December last year (year 2023). The total deposit was Tk 7 lakh 41 thousand 466 crore.

Central bank officials said that crores of rupees account does not mean the account of a millionaire. Because there are many institutions besides individuals in the list of keeping more than 1 crore rupees in the bank. There is no specific limit on how many bank accounts individuals and organizations can open. As a result, one organization or individual also has multiple accounts. Among them are the accounts of various government institutions and organizations worth crores of rupees.

According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data, there were 5 millionaire depositors in the country in 1972 after independence. In 1975 it increased to 47 people. In 1980 there were 98 crore accounts. The number of crore rupees accounts was 943 in 1990, 2,594 in 1996, 5,162 in 2001, 8,887 in 2006 and 19,163 in 2008. At the end of December 2020, the number of accounts worth crores stood at 93 thousand 890. It increased to 1 lakh 1 thousand 976 in December 2021. As of December 2022, the number of those accounts was 1 lakh 9 thousand 946. In December 2023, it stood at 1 lakh 16 thousand 908 and lastly in June 2024, that number increased to 1 lakh 18 thousand 784.
