Aceh Bridge Sabotage Sparks Outrage, Calls for Accountability

A critical infrastructure project in Aceh province has been compromised by suspected theft, prompting strong condemnation from both local and national leaders. The incident, involving the dismantling of bolts from a bailey bridge under construction in Teupin Mane, Bireuen, has raised concerns about security and the potential disruption of vital supply lines.

The brazen act of sabotage was first reported on Monday, November 29th, and further details emerged on Tuesday, December 30th, 2025, as officials responded to the unfolding crisis.

Governor Manaf Condemns “Insolence”

Governor Aceh Muzakir Manaf, widely known as Mualem, issued a stern rebuke to those responsible, characterizing their actions as opportunistic and deeply disrespectful. “Irresponsible people, in times like this, look for opportunities to sell bad iron. That’s called insolence,” Mualem stated to journalists in Banda Aceh. He implored the perpetrators to reconsider their behavior and refrain from exploiting a disaster situation for personal gain.

Mualem emphasized the crucial role the bridge plays in serving the public. “We urge people to be aware. If infrastructure is built, it is for the benefit of our community too. If the bridge collapses, how will we be supplied with basic necessities?” he questioned, highlighting the potential consequences of the sabotage.

Army Chief Expresses Anger Over Deliberate Act

The severity of the situation was further underscored by the reaction of Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak, who described the theft as an act of deliberate sabotage. “Even in compact conditions, there are still people who are trying to sabotage our bailey bridge. Two days ago, maybe there was a broadcast of this, dismantling the bolts,” General Simanjuntak said during a press conference at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base Ops Integrated Command Post in East Jakarta.

The General’s strong words reflect the military’s commitment to ensuring the completion of the bridge and maintaining security in the region. The incident raises questions about the vulnerability of infrastructure projects to criminal activity and the need for enhanced security measures.

Implications for Aceh’s Infrastructure

The theft of the bridge bolts represents a significant setback for Aceh’s infrastructure development. The bailey bridge was intended to provide a vital transportation link, facilitating the delivery of essential goods and services to communities in the region. The delay caused by the sabotage could have far-reaching consequences, potentially hindering economic activity and exacerbating existing challenges.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting critical infrastructure from malicious acts and the need for a coordinated response from all stakeholders. Authorities are currently investigating the incident and working to expedite the repair and completion of the bridge.
