CHENNAI: The Chennai ICF factory, which holds the record for producing the most number of coaches in the world, enters its 67th year tomorrow with futuristic projects such as the production of ‘Hydrogen’ trains.
One of the oldest factories of the Indian Railways, Perambur ICF, Coach Manufacturing Plant was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 2nd October 1955. Initially, it was a factory for fitting internal parts of trains. After that it was gradually raised and evolved into a railway coach manufacturing factory.
According to the needs of passengers and time, coaches are being manufactured in 175 types, 600 designs, including state-of-the-art train coach, tourist, military train, metro train. In total, more than 9,500 people are working in this factory located on 516 acres. 100th train in 1957; 500th in 1958; 1,000th in 1962; In 2015, the 50 thousandth train coach was also manufactured.
Apart from Indian Railways, it has exported boxes and components worth Rs 605.75 crore to Thailand, Taiwan, Zambia, Philippines, Uganda, Vietnam, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Angola and Sri Lanka.
Last year, 2018–19 produced a maximum of 4,166 coaches, making it the largest coach factory in the world. Vande Bharat high-speed train, produced at low cost, has attracted everyone’s attention. ICF officials said:
In the last 66 years, it has produced a total of more than 68,000 coaches, making it the largest coach manufacturer in the world.
To take this industry to the next stage of development, Central Railway is implementing various new projects. Vande Bharat has emerged as a high-speed, low-cost, high-passenger train. We are going to manufacture more luxury trains like ‘Vande Bharat, Garib Rath’ and short distance high speed trains.
We are going to manufacture many types of passenger train, parcel train with bed facility. Next, the railways plans to manufacture a hydrogen fueled train domestically. For this, the design and production works are likely to be done in the ICF Bill in the coming years, they said.
