The national forum on the Sustainable Development Goals singled out three municipalities for their efforts to achieve the SDGs in their respective territories.

In 2015, 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations with a view to eradicating poverty, protecting the planet and guaranteeing prosperity for all. Benin is committed to achieving these SDGs through several initiatives. These are assessed at regular intervals on various occasions such as the National Forum on the SDGs. The first edition opened in Cotonou on Tuesday May 30, 2023 and will end on June 1st.

As local communities are at the forefront of efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, this year’s forum places particular emphasis on their contribution. This is how the theme chosen for the forum is entitled “Building Resilience to Accelerate Local Action for the Sustainable Development Goals”. The idea is to evaluate the municipalities and set up the best of them as models of inspiration for the others.

“I congratulate the pioneer communes of Bassila, Nikki, Abomey-Calavi and Avrankou who will present the results of their local examinations and who will inspire others”, indicated Salvator Niyonzima, leader of the technical and financial partners at the opening of the forum. Voluntary local reviews are mechanisms for assessing the progress of local governments in achieving the SDGs. “It’s a local format of what happens in New York every year where all countries are invited to go and talk about their progress”said Magloire Aguessy, director general of coordination and monitoring of the SDGs.

Thus, for the first time, the national forum on the SDGs has distinguished three municipalities, namely those of Bohicon, Parakou and Pehunco for their efforts to achieve the SDGs. A recognition that delights the mayors of these localities. “It is a strong sign that to say that at the grassroots community level, we are also committed”said the mayor of the city of Parakou, Inoussa Zimé Chabi.
