CHENNAI: The 42nd National Archery Championships were held from 9th to 18th on behalf of All India Archery Association.

1,500 sportsmen and women from 28 states and six union territories across the country participated in the tournament at Kevadia Stadium, Gujarat.

A total of 24 sportsmen and women participated in the ‘Recurve and Compound’ categories followed in the Olympic Games, on behalf of Tamil Nadu, including both pre-school categories.

The Tamil Nadu players, who were ranked 16th in the tournament, surprised everyone by defeating the top-ranked Rajasthan team.

They then edged out a strong Maharashtra team in the quarter-finals and easily beat Jharkhand 6-0 in the semi-finals to enter the finals.

In a thrilling final, the Tamil Nadu players faced a bit of a setback and won the silver medal against West Bengal.

Coach Shikhan Hussaini said:

This is the first time that the Tamil Nadu women’s team has won a medal in the national ‘Recurve’ category. In the semi-final match, the Jharkhand team that faced Tamil Nadu included world youth champions Komalika Pari and Ankita Bhagat.

However, our Tamil Nadu players proved their mettle by defeating the Jharkhand team 6-0. Tamil Nadu players will surely win a medal in the upcoming Olympic archery competition.
