The director and painter Achim Freyer (88) receives the German Theater Prize “Der Faust 2022” for his life’s work. The interaction of fine and performing arts gave his work for the stage an unmistakable style, the German Theater Association explained on Thursday in Cologne.

The jury honors “in Freyer both the life’s work and the life of an artist of extraordinary creativity and inexhaustible aesthetic imagination”.

Born in Berlin in 1934, Freyer was a master student of Bertolt Brecht at the Berliner Ensemble, worked as a stage and costume designer and then as a director. In 1972 he went to West Berlin. From 1976 to 2002, Freyer was a full professor at the Berlin University of the Arts.

The stage association organizes the German Theater Prize with the cultural foundation of the federal states, the German Academy of Performing Arts, the NRW Ministry of Culture and the state capital Düsseldorf. The awards in the other twelve categories will take place on November 26th in the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus. (dpa)
