(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 25 – According to Aci-Istat data, in 2023, there were 3,039 deaths in road accidents in Italy (-3.8% compared to the previous year), 224,634 injured (+0.5%) and 166,525 road accidents (+0.4%). The values are slightly up compared to 2022 for accidents and injuries, but down for victims. Compared to 2019, the benchmark for the decade 2021-2030, accidents decreased by 3.3%, road victims by 4.2% and injuries by 6.9%. Deaths from accidents involving scooters and bicycles, including electric ones, are increasing. The social cost of road accidents with injuries to people, as stated in the 2023 report, amounts to almost 18 billion euros in 2023 (1% of the national GDP). If we also consider the costs related to accidents with only property damage (around 4.3 billion euros), we arrive at a figure of around 22.3 billion euros. The road mortality rate increases from 53.6 to 51.5 deaths per million inhabitants between 2022 and 2023 (53.1 in 2019). In 2023, the number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants is higher than the national average (5.2) in 13 regions. The road mortality rate in large municipalities rises to 4.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, from 4.2 in 2022. The mortality rate remains higher on extra-urban roads, with 4.1 deaths per 100 accidents (4.3 in 2022); drops to 2.7 on motorways, while it is equal to 1.1 on urban roads (respectively 4.3, 3.5 and 1.1 in 2022). The national average, practically unchanged since 2010 except for insignificant fluctuations, is equal to 1.8. Among the incorrect driving behaviours, the most frequent are confirmed as: distraction (33,144 accidents, 15.1% of the total), proceeding without respecting the right of way or traffic lights (28,389 accidents, 12.9%), high speed (18,524, 8.4%). The three groups together constitute 36.5% of the cases (80,057). Based on the new collision matrices, the exposure to the risk of mortality is high for drivers of bicycles and electric scooters involved in accidents with cars or isolated vehicles. Motorized two-wheelers record a high number of accidents involving collisions with cars, light commercial vehicles and isolated vehicles. Pedestrians are at greater risk than other users when they collide with cars and industrial vehicles. The number of victims increased in 2023 for drivers of electric scooters (21; 16 in 2022) and bicycles and electric bicycles (212; 205 in 2022), pedestrians were stable (485) and truck occupants (112, -32.5% on the previous year), motorcyclists (734, -6.0%), car occupants (1,332, -3.1%) and moped drivers (68, -2.9%). Looking at the distribution by age, the victims are concentrated in the 20-29 and 45-59 age groups for men, and over 55 for women. The largest increases are recorded in the age groups: 75-59 years (+23.6%), 5-9 years (from 8 to 13 victims) and 45-49 years (+1.8%). The most vulnerable users represent 50% of road deaths (49.3% in 2022), the mortality rate for pedestrians, equal to 2.6 per 100 accidents due to hitting a pedestrian, is 4 times higher than that of car occupants (0.7), the value of the mortality rate for motorcyclists is 2.4 times higher (1.6 deaths per 100 accidents); it is instead 2 times higher for drivers and passengers of bicycles, electric and otherwise, and scooters (1.1 deaths per 100 accidents).
