Acronis, data backup and cybersecurity company, hacked

by time news

A hacker going by the nickname “Kernelware” who stole data from Acer a month ago now claims he broke into the Swiss cybersecurity business Acronis. However, the data breach at Acronis only affected 12 gigabytes of data, which is significantly less than the amount that harmed Acer. On Thursday, March 9, 2023, the trove of data was uploaded to the Breach Forums, though no login passwords were revealed in any of the posts. The hacker, who was also responsible for recent data breaches at Indian bank HDFC and Acer, claimed they broke into the Acronis system because they “were bored and wanted to embarrass the company.”

According to Kernelware, the compromised data includes a variety of certificate files, command logs, system configurations, system information logs, files on its file system, and Python scripts for its maria.db database, as well as material backup configuration and a large number of screenshots of your backup operations. The data that was stolen and the fact that the breach did not result in the theft of any login passwords can be verified. However, several of the files and folders featured photos and internal records from web hosting company Liquid Web, which is located in Lansing, Michigan.

Kevin Reed, the company’s chief information security officer, posted more details on LinkedIn. According to him, the security breach only affected one of the company’s clients, and now they have disabled access to the account that was breached.

“No other systems or credentials have been compromised,” he noted later in the conversation. Acronis, for its part, has said via Twitter that “none of the Acronis products have been compromised.”

In the wake of this revelation, it’s even more important to make sure all bases are covered when it comes to cybersecurity, given that this breach was caused by the credentials of a single person being hacked. This event, along with other recent cybersecurity-related ones, serves as a reminder of how important it is for businesses and other organizations to take precautions to protect themselves. There has been an increase in the probability of cyber attacks in recent years due to the continuous development of technology. These attacks can have significant repercussions, including monetary loss, reputational damage, and legal liability.
