What spider bit them? The 2019 Oscar-winning team for Spider-Man. New Generationan animated and visually stunning re-reading of the adventures of the most interesting superhero in the Marvel catalog, no doubt wanted to do even better with the sequel to this delightful first installment, but confused one-upmanship with renewal.
If you missed the first episode, know that the spider-man is still this 15-year-old boy in the grip of the torments typical of adolescence, whose superpowers contracted after a bite from a radioactive spider are both the developer and catalyst. The multiverse is the new cream pie of Hollywood screenwriters to stun the viewer with their narrative sleight of hand and – in the best of cases – evoke the vertigo of our multiplied lives in virtual worlds. The big winner of the Oscars 2023, Everything Everywhere All At Oncewas a good example.
In the case of Spider-Man. Across the Spider-Verse, this artifice of the story only serves to thin out the plot in order to create a semblance of suspense. Because a third episode is scheduled for April 2024…
On the visual side, the disappointment is the same. A tribute to the original comic strip, to its dot pattern and even to its printing defects, the virtuoso alliance between 3D modeling and traditional cartooning still makes it possible to marry fluidity of movement and texture of the paper. But this technical ingenuity, copied many times since by other animated feature films, runs on empty, as the film accumulates layers of different images and garish colors in a maelstrom that is exhausting to watch.
