The Minister of Interior, Imed Trabelsi, revealed the reactivation of the committee responsible for following up on the fuel smuggling file, explaining that it will be headed by him and will take bold decisions to end this phenomenon.

This came during a press conference yesterday, Friday, where he stressed the size of the problem, noting that “the amount of fuel smuggling is very large and there are countries around Libya that feed on its fuel.”

Al-Tarabulsi explained that the first decision taken by the committee was to prevent the issuance of permits to establish new fuel stations, pledging to follow up on stations involved in smuggling, close them down, and refer their managers to the Attorney General.

Al-Tarabulsi added, “If it is proven that a fuel truck driver is involved in smuggling, even if it is only 10 liters, he will be referred directly to the Public Prosecution.”

The Minister of Interior considered what happened in Libya during the past two days, in terms of unprecedented crowding at gas stations, to be unacceptable in an oil country, stressing his intention to take all necessary measures to ensure the smooth provision of fuel to citizens.

Most Libyan cities are witnessing a severe fuel crisis these days, which has led to long queues of cars in front of gas stations, without a clear explanation of the causes of this crisis.
