Impeachment trial speeds up after 75 days of six-member system
Choi: “The remaining person will also be appointed when the ruling and opposition parties agree”
Heno’s backlash… Choi exercises veto power over twin special prosecutors
Acting President Choi Sang-mok, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance, appointed two of the three candidates for the Constitutional Court elected by the National Assembly on December 26 last year on the 31st. Accordingly, the Constitutional Court was able to proceed with the impeachment trial of President Yoon Seok-yeol in 75 days, moving away from the six-member system to the eight-member system.
Acting President Choi presided over a cabinet meeting at the Seoul Government Complex this afternoon and said, “We have decided to appoint a Constitutional Court judge out of the urgency of the need to prevent a possible economic and livelihood crisis by ending political uncertainty and social conflict as soon as possible.”
Subsequently, candidate Cho Han-chang, recommended by the People Power Party, and candidate Jeong Gye-seon, recommended by the Democratic Party of Korea, were appointed, but the appointment of candidate Ma Eun-hyuk, recommended by the opposition party, was put on hold. Regarding Candidate Ma, Acting President Choi said, “I will appoint him as soon as an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties is confirmed.” With Acting President Choi appointing two judges, the Constitutional Court now has an eight-member system out of nine judges. It is expected that the ‘line impeachment’ phase that the Democratic Party predicted for the acting president while pressuring the appointment of judges to the Constitutional Court will come to an end. However, the fallout continues, with both the ruling and opposition parties, including National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik, expressing regret over the push for the appointment of Acting President Choi.
On this day, Acting President Choi exercised his right to request reconsideration (veto) from the National Assembly on the so-called ‘double special prosecution bill’, including the civil war and first lady Kim Kun-hee special prosecution bill. Acting President Choi said, “This is a bill that infringes on national interests,” and added, “I appeal to the ruling and opposition parties to put their heads together and come up with a reasonable solution.”
