The government provides emergency living expenses to the families of the victims of the Jeju Air disaster in Muan. We have decided to take strict action against internet posts that defame the victims and their families or spread false information.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance, announced this at the 7th meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters held on the 2nd. Acting President Choi said, “We offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved families who are grieving,” and added, “As of last night, 24 victims were laid to rest at the funeral home. He emphasized, “Relevant organizations should provide sufficient support so that the bereaved families do not experience difficulties during the funeral process.”
In this regard, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to provide guidance on quickly providing emergency living expenses to bereaved families experiencing difficulties making a living. In addition to the existing local tax reduction and collection deferral counseling, you can also receive counseling on deferring national tax payments through the Disaster Victims Integrated Support Center.
Acting President Choi also requested relevant agencies to promptly implement suggestions made by bereaved families, such as the issue of office worker and military leave, which were discussed at the disaster headquarters the previous day. At the same time, he repeatedly emphasized, “Even after the funeral proceedings are completed, we will look after the bereaved families until the end and provide them with the necessary support.”
Regarding the sharing of indiscriminate posts and fake news about victims and bereaved families on some social networking services (SNS), the Korea Communications Commission plans to request cooperation from platform operators, including blocking them. The National Police Agency also plans to monitor, delete or block posts that defame the victims and their families, and initiate investigations if necessary. Acting President Choi said, “We earnestly ask you to refrain from actions that cause pain to the bereaved families and well-meaning officials,” and asked, “We hope that the judicial authorities, including the National Police Agency, will take strict legal action.”
The government plans to convert the data extracted from the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) of the accident airliner into audio files by the 3rd. The flight recorder will soon begin analysis through the National Transportation Safety Board. Acting Director Choi said, “We hope that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will do its best to ensure that the cause of the accident is quickly and fairly revealed.”
