Action to popularize cycling for fuel crisis | Minister

The Ministry of Transport is taking steps to popularize cycling as a solution to the traffic problems caused by the fuel crisis in the country.

Accordingly, steps have been taken to popularize cycling among school children in areas outside the city.

In addition, the Ministry of Transport intends for people traveling by train to Colombo to cycle from their homes to the nearest railway station and park safely at the railway station.

Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Transport and Highways has stated that the Sri Lanka Police will work with the Institute of Engineers of Sri Lanka and other companies involved in cycling to introduce new lanes for the safety of cyclists.

Parks and rides will be set up
He also mentioned that parks and rides should be set up on the seven main roads leading to Colombo.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena said parks and rides should be set up at all railway stations to reduce daily traffic to Colombo.

This was stated by Minister Bandula Gunawardena at a recent meeting held at the Maga Neguma Medura Auditorium of the Ministry of Highways.

Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Highways W. R. Premasiri, Additional Secretary. C. Tilakaratne and senior officers of the Sri Lanka Police and representatives of the Cycling Association were present.
