Chennai,

According to a statement issued by Bamaga Youth leader Anbumani Ramadas; –

“Twelve fishermen from Rameswaram area who were fishing near Kachchativu in the Bay of Bengal have been arrested by the Sinhala Navy. Their boat has also been confiscated. This encroachment of the Sinhala Navy is highly reprehensible! This is the third arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen in the five days from March 29 to yesterday.

While 7 fishermen have already been arrested, 19 have been arrested this week alone, including them. Serial arrests should not be allowed. A meeting of the Joint Working Group of the two countries was held recently to resolve the issue of fishermen. It is not fair to continue the arrests even after India has said that it should not be harsh on fishermen. The federal government must take immediate action to release all arrested fishermen. ”
