A famous Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg harshly reacted to the disaster at Kakhovskaya HPP in Ukraine.

On June 8, Thunberg retweeted a video on Twitter about the disaster at the hydroelectric plant and called what happened “another atrocity” on the part of Russia. She demanded that Moscow be held accountable for the crimes:

“This ecocide, as a continuation of Russia’s unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine, is another atrocity that leaves the world speechless,” she wrote. Tunberg. “Our eyes are once again focused on Russia, which must answer for its crimes.”

Destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam

The dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, which has been controlled by Russian troops for more than a year, was destroyed on the night of June 6. An uncontrolled discharge of water down the Dnieper began. Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for the disaster. Independent analysts admit that the dam could have collapsed either as a result of a night explosion or shelling, or from previous damage.

As a result of the destruction of the dam, dozens of settlements and about five thousand residential houses in the Kherson region were flooded. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, as of the evening of June 8, 2,339 people, including 120 children, were evacuated from the flooded areas. Kyiv calls the accident the biggest man-made and man-made disaster in the world in recent decades.

Kakhovskaya HPP is the lower step of the Dnieper cascade of power plants. It is located in the Kherson region. It was built for six years, starting in 1950. Now the station does not produce electricity and, accordingly, does not work as part of the Ukrainian energy system. In 2020, the government of Ukraine approved the decision on the further development of the station and the construction of Kakhovskaya HPP-2, but due to the war, the implementation of the project never began.

Earlier, “Ukrhydroenergo” reported that Russia had established its military base at the hydroelectric power station. The hydroelectric plant is located 5 km from Novaya Kakhovka, also occupied by the Russians.
