(ANSA) – OSLO, 24 AUG – A group of activists, including Swedish environmentalist Greta Thunberg and members of Extinction Rebellion, attempted to block an oil and gas processing plant in southwest Norway on Thursday. In a social media post, Extinction Rebellion Norway said eight kayaks and three motorboats had entered a safety zone outside the Karsto processing plant to “prevent the normal operation of tankers.” Activists, including Thunberg, were also stationed at the plant’s gates to prevent vehicles from entering. “We cannot stand by while the fossil fuel industry robs people of their lives and destabilizes our life support systems,” Thunberg said in a post. The Karsto plant is operated by Norway’s Equinor and is the largest of its kind in Europe, according to the company. Equinor says around 30 oil and gas fields are connected to the plant. A spokeswoman for the company confirmed the start of the protest, stressing that “at this stage the plant is operating normally.” The police are dealing with the protest, she added. (ANSA).
