An armed group released activist Moatasem Al-Arabi two days after he and his companion Mohammed Ishtiwi were kidnapped in the city of Misurata last Monday.

Social media circulated the news of his release after a wide campaign of condemnations and demands to reveal his fate and whereabouts, and he is in good health.

This incident sparked a wave of condemnation and denunciation, the latest of which came from the French embassy, which demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Al-Araibi, calling for the release of all those arbitrarily detained in Libya.

The US Embassy and the UN mission have previously expressed their deep concern over the kidnapping of Al-Araibi, calling on the relevant authorities in the city to open an urgent investigation into the incident.

The mission also called for holding accountable all those responsible for kidnappings and arbitrary detentions and for there to be no impunity, noting that the arrests created a climate of fear and an erosion of the rule of law, according to the statement.

The mission’s statement came in support of the statement of the notables of Misurata and the municipal council, who condemned the kidnapping of the two young men, “Moatsem Al-Arabi and Mohammed Ishtiwi,” and called on the security authorities to make efforts to uncover and prosecute the perpetrators.

The activist Al-Arabi was kidnapped by an armed group wearing civilian clothes, along with Mohammed Ishtiwi, in the city of Misurata on June 8. The latter was beaten and tortured before being released.
