Around fifty opponents of hunting with hounds gathered near the Château de Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne) this Sunday. During this demonstration, they demanded the suppression of this recreational hunting, which has around 10,000 practitioners in France, reports The Parisian.
Activists are calling for an end to this activity, which they consider cruel. This practice consists of chasing an animal with a pack of dogs until it dies of exhaustion, is killed or escapes. “This is a practice that makes itself appear civilized […] but it’s barbarism in disguise,” says the co-president of the Animal Campus to our colleagues.
A platform launched to ban hunting with hounds
This demonstration comes a few days after the broadcast of a forum launched by the animalist party and supported by the signature of 117 elected officials. According to an Ifop survey dating from 2021 and cited by a municipal councilor, 86% of French people are opposed to hunting with hounds. For his part, the president of the Vénerie society defends this hunting as an activity at the foundation of the history of the castle.
