Four people, including the head of a private security firm that caused controversy by providing excessive security to actor Byun Woo-seok, including flashing lights at airport passengers and checking airline tickets, have been criminally charged by the police.
Incheon International Airport Police Department announced on the 16th that they have arrested four people, including Mr. A, a 40-year-old private security company CEO, without detention on charges of violating the Security Industry Act. The remaining three people, excluding Mr. A, were revealed to be two bodyguards belonging to the security company and one freelance bodyguard.
Person A and others are accused of committing acts beyond the scope of security duties, such as showing off their force to other passengers while guarding Person Byeon at Incheon Airport on the 12th of last month.
At that time, Mr. Byun used Incheon Airport to attend an Asian fan meeting tour held in Hong Kong. Many fans flocked to Incheon Airport to see Mr. Byun, and private security guards even controlled the gates.
During this process, Mr. Byun’s bodyguards flashed their cameras at other passengers, inspected their plane tickets, and blocked them from using airport lounges. Posts and videos claiming this spread through online communities, sparking controversy.
According to the current security industry law, security professionals must not infringe on the freedom and rights of others or interfere with legitimate activities when performing security work. They must also not instruct security guards (bodyguards) to perform work other than the security work for which they have been authorized. Bodyguards must also not display force or use physical force on others, or engage in acts that go beyond the scope of security work.
The personal protection work that Mr. Byun requested from Mr. A’s security company is included in the security business under relevant laws.
After further investigation, the police plan to consider whether to additionally charge Mr. A and four others with coercion and obstruction of business.
