She was one of the first German actresses to publicly admit her homosexuality. However, Maren Kroymann did not only receive praise for this.

Maren Kroymann has been in front of the camera since the 1980s and is one of the best-known faces in film and television in Germany. For a long time she enjoyed great success as an actress, appearing in TV and cinema hits such as “Wolffs Revier”, “Tatort”, “Mein Leben & Ich”, “Mängelexemplar” and “Das Superweib”.

In recent years, Maren Kroymann has increasingly performed as a cabaret artist. She is now classified in the “humor department” and can live with that: “I’m old anyway, I’m beyond good and evil, I don’t have to be a role model anymore,” said the 74-year-old in a new interview with “Stern”.

She became a role model for many thanks to an article in the magazine 30 years ago: On the cover, Maren Kroymann celebrated her public coming out in 1993 – as one of the first German actresses ever to do so. Years later, women still thanked her and told her that they had also come out as lesbians because of her “Stern” story.

In addition to a lot of support, Maren Kroymann also had problems – of a professional nature. “ARD was not happy,” she says, describing the station’s reaction at the time. After her satirical show “Nachtschwester Kroymann”, which ran between 1993 and 1997, she received no major offers for roles or formats on ARD for 20 years, with a few exceptions.

The cabaret artist now has her own ARD show again: “Kroymann” has been running since March 2017 and consists of satirical contributions by the actress that deal with current social problems and feminist issues. Today, Maren Kroymann says with relief: “I can do what I want and no longer have to conform to any sexual image.”
