Admiring the festival audience’s cinephilia, Tilda Swinton looked back on the key stages of her career, the directors with whom she worked and the workings of the film creation process.

By viewing excerpts from “Caprice”, “Eternal Daughter” and “Orlando”, the audience was able to discover an artist sensitive to details, determined and daring, in front of and behind the camera.

Always seeking to create a unique bond with the viewer, Tilda said she takes a “particular interest in framing” and considers the characters in a film as “in their own right”.

In addition to her journey, Tilda Swinton shared with the audience her view on the evolution of cinema in an international context marked by the surge in streaming and the covid crisis, explaining that the pandemic has allowed spectators to understand the importance of the collective experience brought by cinema.

Scottish actress, screenwriter and producer, Tilda Swinton began her acting career in 1985 in Caravaggio by Derek Jarman. Their collaboration included seven other films, including The Last of England (1987), Edward II (1991, Best Actress, Venice Film Festival) and Wittgenstein (1993). She established relationships with directors like Jim Jarmusch (Only Lovers Left Alive, 2013 and The Dead Don’t Die, 2019), Luca Guadagnino (Amore, 2009; A Bigger Splash, 2015; Suspiria, 2018), Joanna Hogg (The Souvenir Part 1 and Part 2, 2019 and 2021; The Eternal Daughter, 2022) or Bong Joon-ho (Le Transperceneige, 2013 and Okja, 2017).

Tilda Swinton has also filmed with director Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin, 2011) and the great Hungarian director Béla Tarr (The Man from London, 2017). In 2020, she received a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the BFI Prize in recognition of her entire cinematographic work.

More recently, she starred in Three Thousand Years of Waiting for You (2022) by George Miller, in Asteroid City (2023) by Wes Anderson and The Killer (2023) by David Fincher, in competition at the 80th Venice Film Festival.

Between tasty anecdotes and open discussions on their vision and practice of the profession, actors, directors, screenwriters and producers are invited in the “In Conversation with…” section to exchange freely with the festival public.
