The German Stage Members’ Cooperative (GDBA) has announced a flash mob in front of the Chemnitz labor court for next Monday. There, the cases of the Leipzig actress Katharina Schmidt and the Naumburg actor Antonio Gerolamo Fancellu will be negotiated at a conciliation hearing before the stage arbitration court. The theater management in Leipzig and Naumburg imposed house bans on both artists at the end of last year. Before that, Fancellu was terminated without notice by Theater Naumburg, and Schmidt’s and another artist’s contracts were not renewed at Schauspiel Leipzig for “artistic reasons”. “We don’t leave the colleagues alone. The cases in Leipzig and Naumburg shocked us all,” says a press release from the newly elected chairman of the GDBA, Andreas Hammer. The practice of issuing house bans should not become normal. Instead, Hammer calls for dialogue and reform with regard to the non-renewal of actresses’ employment contracts. (mq)
