The Mayor of the District of Bamako laid a wreath in front of the Russian Embassy in Mali in commemoration of the first manned flight into orbit made by the Russian, Yuri Gagarin, on April 12, 1961.

This symbolic gesture of remembrance and recognition took place in the presence of the Russian communities in Mali, but also of the representative of the ambassador. There were also municipal elected officials from Commune II where the Russian Embassy is located.
After the symbolic laying of a wreath of flowers, Mayor Adama SANGARE said he was happy and proud to participate in the commemoration of an event marking the recent history of Humanity which profoundly changed the perception of man in the conquest space of the 20th century; this April 12, 1961.
According to him, the sending of the first man in space is a historic act, a founding progress, a technical and technological achievement and an immense hope for humanity at the end of a deadly war that devastated the European economy and caused a stir in all nations.
He said that Yuri Gagarin had been the first man to defy gravity in a space flight which must, according to him, be an example for the youth of his country, 62 years later.

Coming from deep Russia, for the mayor Adama SANGARE, Yuri Gagarin embodied “the ideal of Soviet equality” which gave the chance to the whole of the population by the affirmation of skills for the Fatherland; came out on top in the selection process.
In his speech, the Mayor of the District describes a man whose physical qualities, his professional skills as a fighter pilot and his courage wrote his name in the history of the world to be the First Man in space. as part of the Soviet Space Program during the VOSTOK1 mission.
Yuri Gagarin’s courage and patriotism are an astonishing source of inspiration, said Mr. SANGARE, hoping that his story will inspire patriotic outbursts in Bamako.
“By an hour and forty eight minutes (1h48) of space flight, Yuri Gagarin becomes the first man to travel in space and the first man to orbit the Earth”, declared the elected municipal official.
For this courage, he says, Yuri Gagarin did not live in vain, in reference to this Bambara proverb which says “He who planted a tree did not live in vain”.
