The Adani group company has sought licenses to expand its power distribution business in several parts of Mumbai, including the country’s largest cargo port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port.

In this regard, Adani Navi Mumbai Power Company has issued a public notice in several newspapers today stating that it has approached the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Authority in association with Adani Transmission Company for power distribution license in certain sections of Mumbai metropolitan area. The first application came from Adani after the Electricity Act was amended to allow any company to come forward for power distribution.

The state-owned Maharashtra Power Distribution Company provides electricity in Mumbai suburbs such as Mulund, Bandup and Thane districts, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Uran and Taloja. At present, Adani Group is interested in acquiring power distribution license for these locations. Jawarkal Nehru Port, located near Navi Mumbai, is also competing with Tata Power for power supply rights.

Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has accepted the application of Adani Navi Mumbai power company. The Adani Group has said that within 5 years after getting the license, it will serve 5 lakh consumers. Adani Transmission owns more than 99 percent stake in Adani Navi Mumbai power company. Adani’s cousin Pranav Adani also holds some stake.
