When you first start fitting your hearing aids, some of the sounds may sound too loud, which can be a bit off-putting. As you adjust and form new habits with the hearing aids, your brain will learn which sounds to focus on and which sounds to reject.
Stay positive and be patient
Although you will immediately notice the effect the hearing aids will have on your hearing, it may take several months for you to fully adjust to them. Sometimes you may feel that it is tiring, but patience and prolonged assembly of the devices, together with a positive attitude, are the key to achieving your goal – to hear and understand better.
Adjust the volume
When you turn on your hearing aids, they will automatically adjust to the appropriate volume. Depending on the model of your hearing aid and how the hearing aids were set up, you can also adjust the volume yourself. You can do this by using the button on the hearing aids, or using the myPhonak app.
You should know that increasing the power of the devices will not necessarily make the speech sound clearer – you should consult the speech therapist who treats you.
Actively participate in conversations
Even with the hearing aids, there can still be situations where you have trouble following a conversation, especially one where many people are talking at once. When this happens, approach the person you would like to hear, focus on them and look in their direction. With time and practice you will feel more confident and comfortable. Hearing solutions such as an advanced microphone with Roger™ technology can also help reduce background noise and transmit speech directly to your hearing aids.
