Placed under the theme “Access to housing for all in Africa: What paths?”, this event initiated in partnership with the Pan African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PACCI), UCLG-Africa, and the African Union, brought together many players in the real estate sector, including Shelter Afrique, UN Habitat, as well as government representatives, to discuss crucial housing issues on the continent, indicates a press release from AURE received by MAP.

During this event, speakers highlighted the importance of sustainable urbanization as a lever for socio-economic transformation in Africa.

The discussions highlighted that access to affordable and quality housing is fundamental to improving the living conditions of urban populations.

This theme aligns with the concerns of the African Urban Forum regarding the need to adopt inclusive and sustainable strategies aimed at eradicating informal settlements and creating resilient and prosperous cities, underlines AURE.

For an in-depth analysis of housing, real estate and urban development issues in Africa, this event covered the current state, enablers, barriers and opportunities for housing for all, as well as financing for infrastructure and urban development, the same source noted.

According to AURA, the continent currently faces an urban deficit of 52 million housing units, with countries like Nigeria, DRC, South Africa, Kenya and Ethiopia topping the list.

This situation is compounded by the fact that 800 million new arrivals are expected in African cities by 2050.

The first African Urban Forum highlighted these challenges as the continent strives to find pathways towards sustainable urbanization for Africa’s transformation.

AURE is committed to developing the real estate sector in Africa through an ambitious project to build one million homes on the continent by 2030, with the commitment of the member countries of the Union, said Amine Nokta, Secretary General of AURE, quoted in the press release.

Created on June 28, 2022 in Casablanca, Morocco, AURE brings together more than 30 African countries and aims to respond to the challenges encountered in the field of real estate while continuing to offer accessible and comfortable housing to Africans, recalls the same source.
