User concerns about the Samsung Galaxy S24’s generative AI photo editing feature have been addressed by a senior Samsung employee, who says concerns about the phone’s use of AI are unfounded.

Speaking to TechRadar, Samsung’s head of customer experience Patrick Chomet explained why the Galaxy S24’s Generative Edit feature is a natural extension of what smartphones are already capable of.

For context, Generative Edit allows Galaxy users to easily edit photos by allowing the user to seamlessly change, remove, and add elements to a photo or video. This smooth editing process makes some people nervous because of how easy it would be to create fake photos that are believable.

“There is no real image. You can try to define a real image by saying ‘I took this image,’ but if you’ve used AI to optimize the zoom, the autofocus, the scene – is it real? Or are they all filters? There’s no real image, period “, said Hummet in response

An important thing to note is that using artificial intelligence to edit an image should result in changes to the image’s metadata, along with a specific watermark to make these types of images recognizable. But that doesn’t mean every user will be able to easily spot AI edits, which raises red flags around the spread of misinformation.

“One intention is to want to capture the moment – to want to take a picture as accurate and as complete as possible. For this, we use a lot of AI filtering, modification and optimization to delete shadows, reflections and so on. But we are faithful to the user’s intention, which was to capture this moment.”

The legal fields surrounding AI are a bit muddled right now as lawmakers come to terms with the new technology and what it can do. The EU recently agreed on the final version of the EU AI law, but it has not yet passed.

The requirements of the aforementioned legislation differ according to the level of risk posed by a particular AI system. For example, some AI systems will need to show the sources of their generative models, while others will only need to inform users that the subjects are generated by AI.

Samsung apparently agrees with this approach. Chomet also stated in the TR interview that the company is “very compliant with European regulations on AI”. He noted that countries are right to express early concerns about the potential consequences of widespread use of AI, and mentioned that Samsung is committed to being responsible and thinking deeply about AI regulation.

Artificial intelligence is part of our lives, and we are beginning to see exactly what it is capable of, along with the legal consequences. It is encouraging to see that Samsung is aware of this and is willing to work with governments and legislators to protect the general public from any potential threat that the software may create.
