Adele is a different type of girl from the familiar one: she is far from being a hero or a heartthrob, and her whole role in the world is to be the pin that bursts the balloon called “the reality outside of Adele’s world”. At least that’s what it appears from the first book in the series that bears her name.
The book is made up of short and feverish comic episodes that turn into condensed joke episodes that testify to her character: she doesn’t like anyone, is convinced that everyone around her is stupid, she doesn’t have much more than a hint of compassion, she’s talkative, she overestimates the value of honesty and even her imaginary boyfriend suffers from her.
Adele, of French origin, is actually Leah Goldberg’s “bad boy” in a version devoid of regrets or morals. Young readers in Adele’s homeland fell in love with her, and the Israeli publisher reports that 8 million copies of the first volume were sold. It will be interesting to see how it will be received here. My bet: Parents who seek comfort when it seems to them, despite the love, that their children are not exactly gods, can enjoy it.
“Adele – this is going to end very badly,” Mr Tan and Miss Prickly. From French: the late Michal Assig. Mater Publishing. NIS 78
