This initiative represents the first step for the implementation of merchandise tracking systems in the rail sector, which will give an important boost to rail transport as the most sustainable alternative for the movement of containers.

The pilot project has been carried out on a route from the port of Algeciras to the Zaragoza Plaza freight transport terminal, owned by Adif. The Altia Control Tower solution, in collaboration with Simple, has monitored the journey from when the owner of the goods generates the rail transport order until its arrival at the destination, providing the data that adds value to the transport chain.

Altia Control Tower records complete and detailed information on each of the transport events that occur along the route, as well as the times used. The system traces the arrival, passage and departure of the different intermediate stations and also of the origin and destination terminals, and intermediate events related to the management of the container in the stations (changes of trains, track movements, etc.).

traceability data

The traceability data recorded by Simple includes the moment the merchandise leaves the terminal, the route taken by the containers, the moment they arrive at their destination, when they are unloaded and when they are received, among others.

The project has lasted seven months and has also had the collaboration of Marcotran, which has acted as the train contractor, and Transfesa Logistics, as the rail operator. Sicsa, CSZP and Alsa have also participated as service providers at the terminal from Zaragoza Plaza, Central Intermodal Terminal, Fesava and the Algeciras Port Authority. The joint collaboration of all these companies has allowed us to have total control of the merchandise from its origin to its destination.

This initiative is aligned with the national sustainability strategy called Mercancas al Tren, which encourages large shippers to promote the use of rail for their logistics, favoring the sustainability of transport.

pioneering initiative

The results of this pilot project have demonstrated the feasibility of the Simple platform, which will be operational in January 2024 to be used by all actors in the supply chain.

Simple (English acronym for Simplification of Processes for a Logistic Enhancement), promoted by Adif, State Ports and the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda is a pioneering initiative that will allow the digital and comprehensive exchange of documents, data and information flows between all actors in the supply chain.

This technological platform will ensure interoperability between the different modes and nodes of merchandise transport, facilitate merchandise management and improve logistics competitiveness, which will contribute to reducing stocks, optimizing routes, improving processes and reducing costs, gaining in efficiency and safety. .

The platform is a strategic project that aspires to place Spain at the forefront of Europe in the use of technology, in taking advantage of the possibilities offered by digitization to improve the efficiency and sustainability of freight transport, as promoted by the Commission Union in the framework of the Digital Transport & Logistic Forum.
