Adif has launched the Fire Prevention Plan on the railway lines and their vicinity, which has been applied since 2005 with an annual validity and which in this new edition will last until May 31, 2024.

The plan seeks coordination between Adif and the operating companies to protect the more than 15,000 kilometers of railway lines in Spain and its closest areas from fire.

Adif’s H24 Network Management Center coordinates the areas involved in railway operation and companies in the sector. As Adif explains in a statement, in this context the information provided to Adif the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which anticipates adverse meteorological phenomena, with projections every five kilometers on the infrastructure, favoring the prevention of possible fires.

Preventively, Adif carries out special vigilance in maintenance work and reinforces the work of chemical and mechanical cleaning of vegetation and waste material on the road and its surroundings. In addition, it intensifies the control over the temperature detectors of the train axles, since these devices warn of possible overheating in the rolling system, a potential element of risk during the summer period.

The railway companies act in this area to ensure the optimal state of the brakes of the freight trains (because of their large tonnage), as well as the combustion engines of the locomotives and self-propelled with diesel traction.

The personnel on board the trains and those managing traffic and maintaining the infrastructure are key players in the detection of forest fires close to the track and unrelated to railway operation; all of them alert the Traffic Regulation Centers and the H24 Network Management Center, which transfer the information to the fire extinguishing services of the administrations.

Last summer, a Renfe train that covered the Sagunto-Zaragoza line was involved in a forest fire when it passed through the town of Bejís (Castellón). Several people were injured and the Minister of Transport, Raquel Sánchez, had to appear for this in the Congress of Deputies.
