Washington: The Jetpack Resource Center and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CARE) reported an increase in Muslim representation in the US midterm elections. Jetpack Resource Center Executive Director Muhammad Missouri said representation in the policy-making process is crucial.

Abdul Nasser Rashid and Nabila Syed are predicted to win the election representing State House District 21 and State House District 51. They will be the first Muslims to be elected to the Illinois State Legislature.

If Nabila Islam wins, she will represent Georgia’s State Senate District 7. Rua Roman represents District 97 in the State House. Islam will be the first Muslim woman to be elected to the Senate. Roman is the first Muslim woman to be elected to the House of Representatives. Munira Abdullah is unchallenged in the general election for State House District 9 in Ohio. He also became the first Muslim elected to the Ohio Legislature. That would come with a win for Ismail Muhammad, a Democrat running for State House District 3. Democrat Mana Abdi made history in Maine’s State House District 95. South Portland Mayor Dekha Dhalak wins the state House District 120 race.

Former Euless City Councilman and Democrat Salman Bhojani is predicted to win Texas House District 92. If he wins, he will become the first Muslim elected to the Texas state legislature. Sulaiman Lalani is leading in State House District 76. In this midterm election, 145 Muslim candidates, including 48 state assembly candidates, ran for local, state and federal offices in 23 states. No clear victory anywhere yet. According to Jetpack, there are currently 29 Muslim members serving in 18 states.
