The next two weeks are crucial for Meta CEO and Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg. Ireland should cut off the company’s most important money supply – and ban personalized advertising.

The golden times for Facebook and Instagram are in danger of ending: The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) wants to ban the parent company Meta from displaying personalized advertising without the user’s express consent. According to the EDPB, this order had already been received by the responsible Irish data protection authority on Friday. The deadline: 14 days.

Meta is threatened with a painful decline in sales

So far, Meta has not reacted to the difficult situation for the billion-dollar company. Also a request from stern was left unanswered. Personalized advertising is probably the most profitable pillar for the Meta Group. The company has been collecting and hoarding data from its users for years in order to be able to display advertisements in the most targeted way possible.

Mark Zuckerberg’s social networks have become so good at this that it is not uncommon to hear accusations that smartphones are listening in on their owners, as advertising appears shortly after conversations about a certain topic. Numerous tests have proven that in reality there are other reasons, but it is true that the Meta Group knows very well about its customers.

However, this is precisely the reason for the impending end of the previously reliable source of income: the committee is concerned with the question of whether Meta provides sufficient information about the in-depth data processing and transparently obtains permission to display the tailored advertisements.

Subscription model probably intended as a life preserver

So far, according to a report in the specialist magazine “Bleeping Computer“, Meta promised to obtain the consent of its users, but nothing happened. This inaction apparently led to Norwegian data protection officers, who were the original source of the criticism, successfully escalating their complaint to the EU level.

The only visible reaction from the Zuckerberg empire so far is the planned introduction of a paid subscription for Facebook and Instagram users, who will no longer have to see ads for a fee of up to 13 euros per month (you can find out more here). It is said that the new payment model is directly related to the data protection disputes.
