Doha: In Qatar, it is advised not to use nitrous oxide gas in patients for dental treatment. The instruction in this regard has been given by the Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP) under the Ministry of Public Health.

In a circular sent to all private sector dentists and licensed health institutions in the country, the authorities have asked to stop the use of nitrous oxide, also known as ‘laughing gas’, in treatment procedures. Nitrous oxide is used to anesthetize patients during surgery and dental procedures.

The Ministry of Health’s website explains that the Department of Healthcare Professions has issued such a directive as part of its efforts to ensure the efficiency and competence of those working in the private sector in Qatar. This is also part of efforts to ensure patient safety without affecting the quality of treatment, the circular said. The circular also warns that non-compliance with the terms of the Ministry of Public Health and the Department of Healthcare Professions may lead to legal action.
