Aena Desarrollo Internacional SME, a wholly owned subsidiary of Aena, through which it develops its international activity, has been declared by the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil to be the winner of the auction held for the concession, for a period of 30 years with the possibility of five more, from 11 Brazilian airports, as the company has informed the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).
Specifically, the price of the award was 2,450 million Brazilian reals (around 468 million euros), and it is necessary to add the disbursement of 1,639 million Brazilian reals (312 million euros) in concept of mandatory commitments, so the total amount of the operation amounts to 4,089 million Brazilian reals (780 million euros).
Thus, this is the most important international operation carried out by Aena to date, and makes it the manager of the largest concessionary airport network in Brazil with a network of 17 airports in the country.
The 11 awarded airports accounted for 12% of the traffic of the Rio de Janeiro country in 2019 and are those of Congonhas, Campo Grande, Uberlândia, Santarém, Marabá, Montes Claros, Carajás, Altamira, Uberaba, Corumbá and Ponta Porã. Congonhas airport is the busiest of the group and the second with the most passengers in Brazil.
The management of these airports entails an obligation to pay a variable consideration with a grace period of four years, consisting of a percentage of the gross income that increases from 3.23% to 16.15 annual % The signing of the concession contract is scheduled for February 2023.
According to the planning and studies carried out on the necessary investments, an investment close to 5,000 million Brazilian reals (954.3 million euros) is expected, 73% of what is planned to be carried out in the first phase of the concession, that is, until 2028.
The president and CEO of Aena, Maurici Lucena, congratulated himself for this operation. “The potential of Brazil is indisputable. Its domestic traffic, for example, is 100% recovered”, indicated the manager. In addition, he emphasized that the internationalization of the company is “a guarantee of the future”.
