Alternative stadium candidates include Yongin, Ansan, and Cheonan
The final decision is expected around the 25th.
There is a possibility that the third match of the 2026 FIFA North & Central America World Cup Asian region third qualifying round between Hong Myung-bo and Jordan, scheduled to be held at Seoul World Cup Stadium on the 15th of next month, will be held at a different stadium.
The grass at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, which was the venue for the first match (0-0 draw) against Palestine on the 5th, has become controversial. Captain Son Heung-min (32, Tottenham) has even publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the grass.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also confirmed this fact. After the match against Palestine, the match supervisor reported the condition of the grass to the federation and pointed out improvements to the Korea Football Association.
A Korea Football Association official explained in a phone call with Newsis on the 13th, “The AFC sent an official document asking us to submit a detailed plan for improving the grass at Seoul World Cup Stadium or suggest other candidates for a location that can host the match against Iraq in October.”
The noise from the grass at domestic stadiums is not a problem of a day or two. Problems with the grass are being raised not only at Seoul World Cup Stadium but also at other stadiums where professional soccer K-League games are held.
The Korea Football Association explained that while it is discussing ways to improve the grass with the Seoul Facilities Management Corporation, which manages Seoul World Cup Stadium, it is also looking into other stadiums with relatively fewer grass problems.
However, you cannot freely choose the stadium.
According to AFC regulations, the stadium must be located within 2 hours’ drive or 150km from an international airport.
Considering the current stadium situation, the schedule already planned for the period, etc., Yongin Mir Stadium, Ansan Wa~ Stadium, and Cheonan Sports Complex can be considered as candidates.
A Korea Football Association official said, “We haven’t decided yet whether it will be held at Seoul World Cup Stadium or somewhere else,” and “We have to respond to the AFC by the 25th. The location for the Jordan match will likely be decided around that time.”
