AfD crisis: party leader Jörg Meuthen announces withdrawal – domestic politics

by time news

Loud bang at the AfD!

Party leader Jörg Meuthen (60) no longer wants to act as federal spokesman at the next AfD party conference in December. In an email to the party members, Meuthen is said to have announced his withdrawal from the AfD leadership, reports „t-online“.

Meuthen did not make the decision easy for himself and made it after “many intensive discussions”, especially with his family. According to t-online, he reports an “incredibly demanding” time as a national spokesman, which was marked by “some hardships and disappointments”. The letter says nothing about the exact reasons for the withdrawal.

Meuthen and the two top candidates of the AfD, Alice Weidel (42) and Tino Chrupalla (46), also publicly right after the general election, showed that the party leadership has been seething for a long time.

While Weidel saw “a great result” in parts of the republic and said that the party had finally stabilized in the federal election in 2021, Meuthen was not satisfied with 10.1 percent (-1.3 percent): The AfD had ” lost almost 20 percent of their voters, ”he said in the federal press conference.

Meuthen has long seen his skins floating away within the right-wing party. The radical forces are getting stronger and stronger and he does not want to serve as the “bourgeois fig leaf of the radicals in the party”, he said in an interview.

The radicals around Björn Höcke in the party scratch their hooves …
