A change of government in Saxony or Thuringia could have serious consequences for asylum policy: the AfD is planning to introduce border controls in the event of an election victory.

According to its chairman Tino Chrupalla, if the AfD were to take over government in Saxony or Thuringia in the autumn, it would quickly introduce border controls and terminate the internal German distribution mechanism for asylum seekers. The fact that Thuringia only has internal German borders did not bother Chrupalla. “That would be a program for the first 100 days, for example, where we say very clearly: restrictive border controls,” said Chrupalla in the ARD summer interview. The AfD would “no longer participate” in the distribution according to the so-called Königstein key.

Two thirds of the key is based on tax revenue and one third on the population of the countries.

“I think it is important that the first federal states also deviate from this distribution key in order to put pressure on the federal government to finally change this policy,” the AfD leader stressed in the ARD’s “Report from Berlin”. “Overall, we must ensure that migration in the current form in which it is taking place is finally a thing of the past.”
