Shooting in Washington D.C. Renews Debate Over Afghan Refugee Vetting Process

The shooting of two National guard members in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, allegedly perpetrated by an Afghan refugee, has ignited a fierce political debate over the vetting procedures for individuals resettled in the U.S. following the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. The accused shooter, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, arrived in the United States through Operation Allies Welcome, a program designed to provide a pathway to safety for Afghans who assisted the U.S.during its two-decade intervention.

The program,established after the 2021 decision to withdraw from Afghanistan,aimed to resettle approximately 76,000 Afghans. President Joe Biden has maintained that the U.S. had a moral obligation to protect those who supported American forces, including interpreters, translators, and other personnel who faced retribution from the Taliban.
