Afghanistan: Here they fight for their freedom: BILD at the front against the Taliban – foreign policy

by time news

In the distance, a flag fluttering in the mountains can be seen.

“That’s where the Taliban sit,” says Almash (24) from the Afghan army. “There was fierce fighting here during the night!”

We are in Parwan Province, a three-hour drive from Kabul. A picturesque landscape with a mountain river, tourists used to come here. Now it’s war!

The army is supported by local forces. Amanullaj (29) carries a Russian machine gun, says: “We will not allow the Taliban to take our mountains!”

They dug trenches all around and watch the enemy from here. The most dangerous are the Taliban snipers – and the suicide bombers.

In the past few weeks, the Taliban overran many regions – can they still be stopped?

Soldier Almash: “The majority of the population is on our side and will defend the country.”

► Just: there is little to be seen of that. At the weekend the Taliban declared: 85 percent of Afghanistan belongs to them! An advisor to the Afghan government denies: It’s all propaganda!

However, even Afghan politicians do not deny that many parts of the country were formally overrun. “But it is often the case that the Taliban cannot hold the places,” an advisor to the Afghan government tells BILD, “we are counting on being able to take them again!”

Not many in the population have this hope anymore. Taliban are now also fighting over large cities such as Herat or Mazar-i-Sharif, where the Bundeswehr was stationed until two weeks ago.

At the front in Parwan, the fighters are concerned with survival – and that the radicals do not overrun the country. “We fought for freedom for so many years,” says one of the soldiers, “it can’t just all be over now.”
