About 200 people have died from a terrible cold in Afghanistan, officials say. Afghanistan is facing its coldest winter in 15 years, with very low temperatures since January 10.

The country’s disaster management agency said at the weekend that the death toll had risen by 88 over the past week to about 200, based on data from 24 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces.

Ministry official Abdul Rahman Zahid said in a statement that the deaths were caused by floods, fires and leaks from stoves. About 100 houses were destroyed and almost 80,000 animals died in the cold.

Afghanistan is also facing a major hunger crisis, UN aid agencies have warned that more than half of Afghanistan’s population of around 38 million people are facing hunger and nearly 4 million children are suffering from malnutrition.

Since the Taliban took over in 2021, foreign aid has dropped dramatically and the US has confiscated key assets of Afghanistan’s central bank, exacerbating the country’s humanitarian crises.
