Afghans in Berlin are afraid for their homes and families

by time news

BerlinMobaraka Zaheri lives in Berlin, but since the Taliban’s triumphant advance in her home country Afghanistan, she has dared to go out onto the streets less often. “It scares me, I won’t go out like I did before,” says the 20-year-old high school graduate. She constantly turns around to see if someone is following her. The refugee who came to Germany with her parents five years ago is not at risk in this country. But she heard from her aunt in Kandahar that young women there are beaten when they leave the house. She calls the current situation a “traumatic experience”.

Many Afghans feel like Mobaraka Zaheri, regardless of whether they have recently been refugees or have lived in Berlin for many years. According to the latest statistics from 2020, there are around 14,500 people.
