Almost four years ago, Antena 3 successfully premiered ‘The Cathedral of the Sea’. Based on the homonymous novel by Ildefonso Falcones, the fiction, set in 14th-century Barcelona, focused on the difficult life of Arnau Estanyol, who, thanks to his tenacity, ends up freeing himself from the poverty to which he seemed destined, at the same time time that the inhabitants of the humble fishing neighborhood of La Ribera decide to build the largest Marian temple ever known: Santa María del Mar. Well, Netflix today premieres its sequel, ‘The heirs of the earth’. Produced by Diagonal TV, Yon González (Vergara, 35 years old) gives life to Hugo Llor, son of a deceased sailor, who sees his dream of being a shipbuilder truncated. His effort will lead him to become a great wine producer thanks to the help of a Jew who teaches him all the secrets of the wine.

-What caught you from ‘The heirs of the earth’? Had you read the novel when you were offered the project?

-The proposal itself and that it be with Diagonal TV, which are the ones who had made ‘The Cathedral of the Sea’ with Jordi Frades, who is a great director and a great ship’s captain and who is also in the project. All that already motivated me, without even reading the scripts, to say yes. I have been lucky enough to see the series and I am very proud of it.

-How would you describe your character, Hugo Llor?

-He is a guy who treats people equally, a fighter and a survivor in short.

Fame

«Losing your privacy, going down the street and being asked for photos, has its downside»

-How did you prepare for a character like this?

-Thanks to Jordi Frades, with his good instructions, and trying to get the most out of each scene emotionally, always under his baton. I would say that it has been a walk through the clouds, easy, dynamic and a very effective job because each chapter has been done in ten working days, something not very normal considering that 70% of the sequences were outdoors, which take take longer to prepare and are more complex. Thanks to everyone’s understanding, we have been able to make this wonderful series. The bill is wonderful.

-What lessons do you take from fiction?

-I’ve learned a lot. I have enjoyed it a lot, especially thanks to colleagues like Elena Rivero, who is a magnificent actress. I have learned that you have to continue living the present moment intensely and vibrating it strongly. I’m very happy.

-His character is a great wine producer. What do you like more, wine or beer?

-I’m more into beer (laughs), especially blondes.

-It is your second project for Netflix, after ‘The cable girls’. How do you remember the experience of having worked on what was the first Spanish fiction on the platform?

-Well, very well. Actually, I did it with Bambú Producciones, which is the one I had a few series with, I was very happy and they took great care of me. But the shootings did not change anything, the difference is that through the platforms you end up reaching more people.

Popularity

-His great leap to fame came with ‘El internado’, when there weren’t even social networks. Suddenly, they became idols of the kids. Did you have a bad time at some point?

-Losing your privacy, going down the street, people knowing you and stopping you and asking for photos, seeing you partying and continuing to stop you to take photos when you’re a little cute, well, it does have its downside. Intimacy is something important, come on.

The filming

«I have tried to squeeze each scene emotionally to the maximum»

-Now that ‘The Inheritors of the Earth’ is going to reach the entire planet, does it scare you to live another peak of fame?

-I wish the series, Netflix and Diagonal TV much success, which have been so good to me, but I finished this project with this promotion. I want it to work and I hope you are happy with my work and there is more, but come on, nothing is going to change in my life, nor in my day to day. Fear of succeeding? I wish all fears were that in life (laughs).

-With all the series you have done, which would you say is the one that has marked you the most?

-It is that, of course, they have all had a great value for me and in all the series I have lived very special moments, so choosing one in particular would be like betraying the others. It’s hard for me to decide on one. In all there are scenes where we have done real magic.
