Africa demands two permanent seats on the UN Security Council (SC) after the body is reformed.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, this was stated on Monday by Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio, speaking in New York at a meeting of the Security Council. It was devoted to the topic of expanding Africa’s representation in the Security Council.
“Africa has clearly and convincingly articulated a vision and a model for reform that would ensure equitable representation and meaningful participation of the continent in the UN Security Council. Africa demands two permanent seats on the UN Security Council, as well as two additional non-permanent seats,” the head of the West African state noted. The broadcast was conducted on the UN website.
Granting the continent permanent seats in the UN Security Council, he is confident, will “correct a historical injustice and will allow Africa to unleash its full potential as a dynamic, viable continent that can make a significant contribution to peace and security on the planet. Africa’s experience and approaches remain invaluable in developing comprehensive and effective solutions to global problems,” Bio continued.
“We see the correction of historical injustices against Africa as a priority. As a result of the arbitrary division of Africa during colonialism, the countries of the continent were excluded from key international decisions that affected their future. The lack of sovereignty and political representation during these periods had a long-term impact on Africa’s ability to shape global policies and institutions. Such historical injustices stem from colonial legacies and power imbalances that persist to this day,” the head of state emphasized.
Bio is the coordinator of the Committee of Ten of African Union Heads of State and Government on UN Security Council reform.
