Africa HIV vaccine experiment halted

by time news

Attempts to create a vaccine against HIV infection – a harbinger of AIDS – have been going on for a long time, but without visible success. So another experiment with this vaccine, which the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson has been conducting in Africa since 2017, had to be stopped, as it turned out that the vaccine was only 25% effective.

The experiment involved young women from five countries at high risk of HIV infection. The researchers found that in two years, 51 out of 1,079 women who received the vaccine contracted HIV, while 63 of 1109 women who received placebo were infected. Dr. Glenda Gray, who has been developing a vaccine for 15 years, says the latest vaccine is not potent enough to protect against HIV in high numbers of infections, and that low levels of protection can create a “false sense of security” in women.

Scientists intend to continue the experiment with another version of the vaccine, which has been tested on men and transgender people in various countries, including the United States. Moderna, which has created a coronavirus vaccine using mRNA technology, plans to test an HIV vaccine developed on the same platform.
