Issues of climate finance and mitigation are very important for the African continent, since in parallel with measures to mitigate the impact of the activities of certain enterprises on the environment (mitigation), there must be additional funding for environmental protection measures and the elimination of damage already caused.

As reported by Day.Az, Jacob Ndirangu Kimani, a representative of the Kenyan Authority for Emission Reduction, Sensing and Forest Development, exclusively told Trend about this.

“Climate finance issues have been actively discussed since COP27, which was held in Egypt in 2022. Africa is of interest to the world for its numerous resources, but the responsibility of companies for the impact of their activities on the environment in Africa is important. I think that the discussion at the upcoming COP29 in Baku on the issue of increasing climate finance, separate discussions on the situation on the African continent will have a positive effect on solving pressing problems,” Kimani noted.

According to him, Kenya itself does not have large greenhouse gas emissions at present, since the republic is implementing a “green” development strategy.

“The Republic of Kenya is undergoing large-scale greening of territories, we aim to plant tens of millions of tree seedlings, which will help in the fight against various types of emissions into the atmosphere,” Kimani noted.

In general, in his opinion, protecting nature should become the norm for everyone.

“We have one planet, we must ask ourselves every day – “What can we do to protect it?” In addition to the fact that global coordination is important, we also need personal responsibility for the fate of the planet,” the representative of Kenya noted.

Let us recall that in November this year, Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The decision to do so was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Over the course of two weeks, Baku, becoming the center of the world, will host about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The convention has 198 parties. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
