This September 4, 2023 started in Nairobi, Kenya, the African Climate Summit bringing together African leaders. The meeting should lead to the adoption of African solutions to climate change in Africa before COP28.

In Kenya, African heads of state and international organizations including the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, exchange with actors from civil society, public and private companies until September 06, 2023. participants of this first African Climate Summit will propose “African solutions” to deal with the effects of climate change on the continent.

These include proposals for responding to the question of green industry and its financing in Africa. The unification of voices around these solutions would allow Africa to have a common position before the 28th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP28) scheduled for November 30 to December 23, 2023 in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

For Kenyan President William Ruto, “Africa needs to channel adequate resources through investments and implement appropriate technologies to unlock the full potential of its clean and green natural resources.” William Ruto assures on his X account (ex Twitter) that “this is how we can establish a transition to 100% renewable energy to drive green industrialization on the continent”.

As part of the 20,000 delegates, civil society actors want these solutions to be concrete. “They have to [les dirigeants africains] push for the implementation of climate finance pledges, for funds to be made available. African states are already too indebted, taking more loans to fund climate action would mean pushing us deeper into poverty”, confides Charity Migwi, activist for the climate within the association 350 Africa, to RFI.

On Wednesday 06 September, the discussions will lead to the signing of a declaration called “Nairobi Declaration”. The document will present the proposals and demands of African States on the climate.

The Nairobi Declaration could influence the decisions to be taken from several international meetings to be organized before COP28. In September, the G20 summit in India and the United Nations General Assembly in New York open, then the annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Marrakech in October.
