Good news for Morocco. Eager to host an international competition for many years, the semi-finalist of the last World Cup will host the next African Cup of Nations in 2025. An announcement made official this Wednesday in Cairo (Egypt) by the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, but who was no longer in doubt.

“I am very proud of Morocco,” declared Patrice Motsepe. The main reason is to support Morocco in its bid for the 2030 World Cup, jointly with Spain and Portugal. » In the last 24 hours, all other applications had withdrawn. Like those of the Benin-Nigeria duo or even Zambia, “even if these countries still made their presentation,” assured the CAF president.

Morocco also benefited from the withdrawal of the Algerian candidacy. “This withdrawal is motivated by the FAF’s new approach to the football development strategy in Algeria,” the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) further indicated. The FAF press release was published the same day as the installation of its new president, Walid Sadi.

The award of this CAN to Morocco also takes on a symbolic character after the earthquake which struck the country at the beginning of September and which left nearly 3,000 dead. As a reminder, this 2025 edition was to go to Guinea, which was ultimately forced to withdraw, because it was absolutely not ready to organize the event.

The press conference in Cairo was initially intended to be used to announce the host country of CAN 2027. It will ultimately be the Kenya-Tanzania-Uganda trio, preferred in particular to Senegal, the title holder of the competition.
