The landscape of top-tier African football transfers has been heating up. Just in January, Egyptian Omar Marmoush moved from Eintracht Frankfurt to Manchester City for 75 million euros. Nigerian Victor Osimhen also commanded a 75 million euro fee, joining Galatasaray Istanbul from Napoli.
Adding to the trend, Brentford’s striker Yoane Wissa, representing the Democratic Republic of Congo, was snapped up by Newcastle United for 63 million euros in the final hours of the summer transfer window on September 1. “The best African players almost all play in the five major European championships, and they perform there. This explains their significant value,” stated Moustapha diop,president of the association of football agents in Senegal.
Diop also outlined other crucial factors that contribute to a player’s valuation. “There is age, the status of the club where they play, their position – an attacker is often more expensive, even if the value of defensive players is increasing. It also matters if they are internationals and for which country,” he explained.
The principle of exposure also plays a vital role. “The more a player is exposed, the more value they gain,” Diop added. players representing top African national teams, such as Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and Nigeria, frequently appear among the most highly valued.
