After 48 dates in Paris, the musical “Al Capone” ends prematurely

by time news

Started in January, the show carried by the artists Angunn and Roberto Alagna was to continue until May at the Folies Bergères, but for lack of public and receipts, the production decided to throw in the towel.

It’s a rather abrupt end to the performance for the musical’s team. Al Capone. The show launched on January 28 at the Folies Bergères in Paris and carried by artists Angunn and Roberto Alagna was to resume from April 13 to May 12 after a break and three weeks of rehearsals.

But during the last show, Sunday March 19, the production finally decided to end the event prematurely after only 48 performances against 90 originally planned, as our colleagues from the Parisian.

A piece of news is quite surprising, especially since the box office for the musical had just opened for 25 additional dates. In question, according to Parisianspectators dissatisfied with the show and reservations below the expectations expected by the production (50,000 tickets were sold, i.e. 30 to 40% less than expected).

“I wanted to go after the gesture”

Produced by Jean-Marc Dumontet, the musical takes some liberties with historical reality and tells the love story between one of Al Capone’s sisters and Eliot Ness, played by Bruno Pelletier, an American Treasury agent who, the head of the “Incorruptibles”, waged a merciless war on the famous gangster. Angunn embodies Al Capone’s mistress.

After the first performances and fairly mixed feedback from the public, Le Parisien reports that the production had modified a few passages of the show, which delivered, according to the newspaper, a “quite disastrous image of women in 2023”.

“We wanted to improve the show by working on a new version. I wanted to go after the gesture because the adventure was brilliant, the artistic team and the songs superb. But that was not possible”, explains at the Parisian the producer Jean-Marc Dumontet.

These modifications will not have been enough to convince. If Al Capone’s team will be well paid, the production of the musical, already in deficit of two million euros, lowered its curtain for the last time on Sunday.
