After a two-year hiatus, Iran resumed public executions

by time news

The man was executed in the early hours of Saturday morning in Iran. After two years of interruption linked to the Covid 19 pandemic, this is the first public execution in this country, denounces the NGO Iran Human Rights.

Iman Sabzikar, a worker convicted of the murder of a policeman in February 2022 in southern Iran, was hanged at the scene of the crime, detailed the Norwegian NGO, based on Iranian media articles.

“The resumption of this brutal punishment in public is intended to frighten and intimidate people so that they do not demonstrate”, deplores Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the director of this NGO. He calls for an end to this “medieval practice” and the international community to mobilize in this direction.

Hanging from a crane

Iman Sabzikar, 28, a construction worker, was found guilty of stabbing a policeman to death. His sentence was confirmed by the Iranian Supreme Court in July.

On Twitter, the NGO posted an image of the man with his hands tied behind his back, a rope around his neck, hanging from a crane.

The last public execution took place in June 2020. Four men had been sentenced to death, also for the murder of a police officer.
